Having a fun holiday this far :) C. is being a lovely hostess ^_~ There is too much to see in Seoul, I think I won't have time to go to Pusan, let alone Jeju island. Today was a bit dull since we stayed inside due to the Typhoon warning. We just had a bit of rain and some NZ-like wind. Hope the weather is good tomorrow :)

Goteki - We Go Chrome

I've got this stuck in my head today ^^;;

Take me back to 55
time and place to be alive
muscle cars and movie stars
culluloid and asteroids
good days work at the astrodome
while nuclear family waits at home
saucermen were better then and
everything was made of chrome

Zero G close to me and pull the trigger
Strap it up and on my mark pull the trigger

communistic little green men
will take you back to experiment
for whiter whites uses product x

atomic men don't talk about sex
Nuclear shift from 9 to 5
buy product x when the wage arrives
Diner shines like a thunderbird
and everything was made of chrome

We Go Chrome, We Go... Chrome

Supersonic dreammachine
Like sodestream
Like mercury
The mirrored shines
And spinning lines
And silver flesh
We take the test
And we go chrome.

I watched an old movie last night.
Old black and white movies fall into two categories for me - boring and nostalgic. The movie I watched last night was from the latter category. There was something warm and gentle about it, although the ending was a "here's a moral for you" kind of thing it was rather pleasant to watch.

If you feel like watching a 1950 Japanese movie sometime, watch "The flavour of green tea over rice".

Leaning towers and castles

Check out more towers by following this link.
There's one that's near the town I was born in and one that is not too far from here as well ^^;; both leaning towers.
And more castles here.

One day M. asked me if we can have a spire on the house we will one day own. lol. One day we'll have a crazy monstrosity ^^;; With gargoyles and lions which looks modern and boxy from one side and old-fashioned from the other ^^;; oh and I want at least one secret room o-o!

Just a couple pictures today

Today has been grey, cold and damp - winter in Christchurch.

M and I got up early (for a weekend) to go to the Riccarton market - to check out the Taiyaki ^^;;

We ended up staying quite a bit longer and buying other things as well but I resisted buying the strawberry glasses I saw. I hope I see strawberry glasses again one day ^^;;

Anyway got some toffee with hazelnuts, freshly baked bread, azuki bean taiyaki, a pastry horn with jam and cream, some UK fizzy drinks and American jelly beans, hand-crafted chocolates >->;;; Yup, definitely did not expect to get that much. There was a guy singing California Dreamin' which was quite appropriate for today's weather.

Dropped in to visit both sets of parents, met a friend of M's dad who laughed really loudly and a lot, what an unusual person. Oh and M. had heaps of fun playing on a keyboard at my parents' ^^;; I tried playing a bit of the Green Sleeves but I'm not very good ^^;;

Have some random pictures from Dark Roasted Blend which caught my attention today ^0^

The last one is from Singapore,  I want to go there next time we fly though ^^ M. says - "what if there is an earthquake and you get slashed off the side!"

This is amazing and precious (and I want to eat it tower by tower o-o!)

Lately I feel like blogging but don't have much to say.

I'm looking forward to warm weather and riding my bike. I think I would also like some space. Even if we don't do much together, M. and I are always together when we are not at work. There is nothing wrong with that except I'm used to spending 8+ hours a day alone, that's a treat I rarely get since I started working full time and it just sits at the back of my mind and makes me a little bit more tired every day.

My cats are super cute ^^;; Plussy has a short fuse and my mum does not notice some of the subtle signs that Plussy is getting annoyed. Mum left with another big scratch today. Which is sad, but also a bit ^^;;; cos Kiss-Kiss and I have so much in common >_>;; Ok, I'm not proud of my character but how much can one have in common with a cat? It's not like she listens to the same music as me or reads books.

Did I mention Mango Cheesecake in my last post? It is delish! I want to go to Addington co-op again (too bad M and W don't like it cos it is always busy).

TMI below - read at your own risk

With the impending doom (aka Korean summer holiday), I've been feeling super conscious of the fat I've put on over the autumn/winter period. I did not gain much weight but I look a lot more like a cushion now. (And going on the pill again did nothing to help with that. It seems to make me really hungry all the time u-u. I'm going to try and deal with that and other side-effects for another 3 months and see if it gets any better. I just have to remember that the alternative to sore breasts and being extra chubby is having painful, needlessly long periods). Anyway, the plan is to be very strict with what I eat (except for Saturdays or Sundays when I get to go out to cafes and eat cake or something) and either walk home or ride the bicycle at home 5 times a week. I already got blisters ^^;;  And I'm trying to eat extra protein since it seems to help me feel less hungry. Unlike fruit which seems to make me feel hungrier >_> yay fructose.

Does anyone want to bet if I can get into some kind of non blobous shape by August 23rd?

So my treat for this week is going to be waffle with Asuki beans from Riccarton Market ^-^ おいしそう~
The trailer looks super cool ^^;;  I'm sure it will be worth getting out of bed early on a Sunday.

Sunny Sunday

I could smell spring the last couple of days, but today was just wonderful - sunny and warm. I even took my hoody off for a while ^-^ M. says it was 18 degrees but I think it was closer to 20.

We went for a walk around the park at a leisurely pace and I brought my little camera with me and took some photos.  Then at home I cuddled with Plussy, she could not get comfortable on my lap but wanted to stay anyway. It was super cute ^-^. When M. went to play Settles of Catan with his brother, I decided to use this home-alone time to play around with my hair a bit. I'm looking forward to possibly not having to wear my glasses but I think I'm going to miss the aesthetics of square frames (not worth the hassle though u-u!)

Must resist spending money o-o! *willpower*
Maybe I'll just get one thing >_>;;;;

Holiday plans

So it's decided, I'll be going to Korea for a holiday on the 23rd of August.
I hope the weather will be nice ^-^ C. is being kind enough to let me stay in her apartment (yay!) and hang out with me on the weekends. I'm looking forward to trying to navigate through the subway and go exploring around the place. I hope I won't get in trouble u-u;; It will be the first time I go on holiday by myself + no language skills XD

I'm working on a list of places to visit, this far - a couple fortresses, 4+ palaces, a couple hiking spots, a massive book store (I hope they have foreign books and not just ones in Korean), a stationary store, any arcades I might possibly come across (Drums, PUMP, DDR and Technika yeah!) and cute cafes. I'm hoping to see (and eat) lots of green-tea flavoured desserts :D Oh and I wonder if C. would come to one of the palaces with me and dress up in Korean costumes >_>;;;; It'll be fun!

I think M. is still a bit miffed that I'm going by myself. Apparently I just went ahead and bought the tickets without waiting for him...

Oh and I'm looking forward to catching up with Y. when I get back to N.Z. ^-^V

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

Ahhh, I want to go on a holiday and escape this dreary cold. Too bad that the prospect of going by myself does not really excite me, I do want someone else to share the fun. There are cheap tickets to Tokyo for the start of September and I was so ready to get them and couch surf but then realised I'd have to go the Ghibli museum all by myself. That would be just so sad. On the other hand, M. really does not care much for Ghibli and he gets bored really quickly. Got to decide soon~

I saw this on Miss Crossstitch blog today. I'm very tempted to go out looking for embroiderable objects out in the city now.

Day 25 → Your day, in great detail

Oh how exciting >_>

My alarm goes of at 7:20 am, but M's is generally set for 7 so I'm already awake by the time mine goes. I crawl out of the bed and into something warm. (I recently read that reddit's office has the following clothing policy -genitals must be covered.) If crawling out of bed did not take very long, I make myself some yoghurt diluted with milk for breakfast - it is much faster to drink that way. By 7:40 I'm sitting in the car on the way to work :)

At work, I deactivate the server room alarm and turn the heater on, then settle down in my seat (sometimes with a big cup of green tea) and do my mourning routines (provided that no one left me any messages saying they need my help). My boss comes in half an hour later and we exchange our never changing morning greetings, then it is back to doing what needs to be done, or more frequently trying to figure out how to do it :D I'm glad I have the time to learn lots of stuff during the work hours. Every once in a while someone will call or e-mail me or drop into the office and tell me that something isn't working, or ask me to set something up. Sometimes I have a PC to put together and run the installs on, other times I order more stuff for the store room.

If I'm not terribly busy, at 10:15 I have my morning tea - generally something like a banana in the company of G, R, M and or P. It gets pretty noisy in the lunch-room so we like to sit outside (but we have not done that at all since the snow). Then it's back to work again until 12:45. At lunch I tend to do my personal internetting, bug G and co. and replenish the essential nutrients. And then it's back to work again until afternoon tea, then home at 16:40. Some days I seem to be in high demand, go to different parts of the factory and talk to lots of people, other days I can feel pretty isolated up in my office busy doing things that require me to be almost glued to the PC.

I go for a brisk walk to the bus stop (If I leave work on the dot of 16:40, I can just make it in time for the bus and dodge the worst of the traffic, even a minute late and I have to wait for the next bus which takes much longer to get home).

Once home, I feed the cats, turn the heat pump on and settle down with my laptop ^^;;; Plussy often wants attention and cuddles and Ergo only lets me pat her after work.

M. normally gets home 30 to 60 minutes after I do and we have a lil chat and a snack and sometimes go out to TZ to play Technika or Mandurang or to visit  a friend or watch TV (but now the two TV series we used to watch have finished o-o~!), sometimes we get surprise visits from my parents. But soon I want to go to sleep, so I take the kitty cats into the bedroom and pull the duvet over my head.

Snappy's Sausage Necklace

 Is this weird or what? :D I don't think I'd ever wear it, but the idea is wonderful. Wunderbar even ^-~

Hippo in the Park

"In Victorian times, young ladies would ride their hippos through the parks. This painting shows a proper lady riding sidesaddle while her well-bred hippo steps out in style."

Day 23 → A YouTube video

You should proabably turn the sound down.

This is the kind of thing that makes me want to be an engineer. ;)

Friday, June 15, 2012

Day 22 → A website

Dark Roasted Blend - Weird and Wonderful things is a compilation website consisting of picture and link posts - amusing, weird, arty, vintage, bizarre things. Like this optical illusions video and pictures of the abandoned sky-scraper hotel in North Korea.

Day 21 → A recipe

I keep my recipes in a little photo album in the pantry. I don't have much in it, but a few things that I like.

Cheesy muffins

Cherry Pie

Day 20 → A hobby of yours

Ties in pretty well with yesterday's post, does not it ^^?

I read (when I get around to it), and doodle (because painting takes just too much time), and knit (while watching TV, because TV is too boring u-u;;; and I have no attention span), and play with my cats, and try learn a bit of Japanese and play rhythm games (because cheesy J and K pop makes me feel more upbeat but I don't like listening to music while doing other things because it is noisy :D).

P.S. And I don't know when I'm supposed to use commas.

Day 19 → A talent of yours

[tal-uhnt] Example Sentences Origin

a special natural ability or aptitude: a talent for drawing.
a capacity for achievement or success; ability: young men of talent.
To be perfectly honest, I don't really believe in the first definition of talent, and most people would have the same capacity for achievement or success (2), so this is going to be a silly post.

I feel that what is called a talent is generally just something one was taught early on, or spent lots of time and effort perfecting. A sill would be a far more appropriate word. Isn't it lovely that I'm so cynical?
I guess I can paint and make things out of beads, these are just things that interested me and I spent lots of time learning and practising them so it does not feel very special.

I guess I'm also kind of good at remembering certain things - like numbers and where things are, but I find that I tend to make an effort or be genuinely interested in something to remember it.  And I'm terrible at remembering names and faces ^^;;;

Day 18 → Whatever tickles your fancy

Umm, so today I've been reading about setting up and using Dynamic Groups in Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 *looks down*

Oh and I really want a Samsung Galaxy S III ^^;; it seems so completely wrong to spend that much money on a telephone but its technical specifications are disturbingly close to that of my laptop, so I guess it makes some sense after all. Unfortunately all present giving occasions I could use as an excuse to get one for myself (or ask for it as a present) are clustered together in summer, starting with M's and mine anniversary, followed by Christmas, New Years, My birthday and St. Valentine's day. Of Course M's birthday is right there as well, just to cause a huge nasty present rush (add both my parents' birthdays into the same time period) and leaving all the time from March up to the last week of November completely present free.

That's more or less how my logic worked anyway. I guess I know what I'm getting myself for Christmas.

Monday, June 11, 2012

Day 17 → An art piece (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.)

Yoskay Yamamoto

Go look through his gallery ^-^;;; There are a few original characters as well and so many familiar faces ^-^

Sunday, June 10, 2012

Day 16 → A song that makes you cry (or nearly)

When you are in a certain mindset, a song can push you to the edge, while the same song would have little or no effect in different circumstances. There are certainly many songs I avoid listening to when I'm feeling down, but no one song in particular that would make me cry each and every time.

I guess if I had to list a song, it would be

Day 15 → A fanfic

Somehow I never managed to get into fan fiction. I tried reading it a few times but they never fit my ideas of what the characters should be like :) I read lots of web-comics instead.

Check out Yellow Peril Something Positive and Questionable content if you want to waste a few days reading comics. The last two have started in 2001 and 2003 respectively, if you start from the most recent stories and work your way back, you can see how much the graphics have changed.

Friday, June 8, 2012

Day 14 → A non-fictional book

"Until quite recently, we all thought that the history of mathematics begins with Babylonian and Egyptian arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. However, three recent discoveries have changes the picture entirely.
The first of these discoveries was made by A. Seidenberg. He studied the altar constructions in the Indian Sulvasutras and found that in theses relatively ancient texts..."

 From The History of mathematics: A reader by J. Fauvel and J. Gray.

Do you like history, learning a tiny bit about different ancient cultures and adore mathematics? Go read this book.

Thursday, June 7, 2012

Day 13 → A fictional book

A fictional book - hmm a book that is not real? I guess books that are referred to in stories but do not exist would be prime candidates for this blog entry (of course I'm not going to assume I'm supposed to write about a book of fiction here), but one book in particular comes to mind - Codex Seraphinianus. On par with the Voynich manuscript, it is one of the weirdest books you might come across. True, it is an actual book, it was even published in 1981 (and probably based loosely on the Voynich manuscript which dates to the 15th century).

Both are encyclopaedias of imaginary worlds, written in a made up languages, beautifully and extensively illustrated. I'll just post a couple pages from the Codex. Go find it in your local library. (I might or might not have a copy of it in pdf to flick through and induce nightmares ^-~)

It is wonderfully surreal.

Oh, I would love to make a crazy book like that one day. A single, hand written, hand bound, hand illustrated volume.

Day 12 → Whatever tickles your fancy

Things I'm exited about -

Getting my Instax Mini in the post ^-^ looking forward to it. It took me a while to decide on the mini vs the 210 (photo-booth vs standard "wide" film) and I still think I'd like a 210 as well ^-^ But I'll see how it goes first.
I've never had a Polaroid camera before (apart from an i-zone, which was a bit weird, super tiny and I only had two cartridges of film, so it does not count ^^), so I'm very excited but also a bit unsure as to how well it'll go.

One of the cooler/cheesier things about the Instax Mini is that you can get film with cute frames - Hello Kitty, Mickey Mouse, various other Disney ones + just patterns and colours. But I probably will have to order my film overseas and pay a bit extra for it, so I'll have to get used to use the exposures (10 in a cartridge) sparingly.

I paid for the camera today, so with any luck it'll get here by the weekend ^^;; Hope it's just as cute in real life. I'm thinking of putting some stickers on it ^^

I think it will be quite nice to have when we go to Japan next year (I wanted to go this August, but it will have to be next August since we don't know when M will be out of work - he can't take a holiday at all). I plan on trying out couch surfing to and I think it will be cool to take pics with the hosts ^^ Anyway, that's just hopes and dreams for now.

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

Day 11 → A photo of you taken recently

Ahhh! It's hard to get a recent photo of me, M's phone keeps on corrupting its memory card and I lost a bunch of photos due to that u-u. Now I've got a nasty flu (way to spend the long weekend u-u) so I don't much fancy taking a pic of myself and this blog entry had stalled the "Blogathron" for far too long. I shall re-visit this at a later date.
It's snowing *-* whee

Day 10 → A photo of you taken over ten years ago

1999 - A one day camping trip with my class at school (of course not everyone showed up, but I was there). Guess which one is me? I have to say that I was the coolest from 10 to about 13 years old. It all went downhill from there :D

2002  Pre-emptive birthday celebrations about a week before we came to New Zealand. Don't I look completely different? I think I look a lot more like my pre-12 y.o. self now. Guess I've done a full circle.

Sunday, May 27, 2012

Day 09 → A photo you took

I wish there was an easy way to tell which pictures I have already posted here and which ones I have just uploaded to picasa ^^;;;

In summer my parents like to bring me flowers from their garden. I guess that is because in Russia people tend to live in apartments and you don't tend to see many flowers outside of the 3 or 4 months of hot weather. You can tell this photo has been taken a while ago, as I lost all my matryoshka glasses in the February quake.

This photo does not look all that exciting either, but thinking back to the day I took it, it is quite cool. This is Mt Eden  and you can see the volcano crater. I was quite surprised to see that it is all nice and green. Like a jewellery box lined with green velvet. I think this is the first volcano I have ever seen in real life o-o I'm really glad Y. put up with me and showed me so many cool places in Auckland :D

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Day 08 → A photo that makes you angry/sad

I miss Meanie. I hope I will never be irresponsible enough to trust another person with a kitty.

And I miss Sunny, but I feel like we've done the best we could for her.

Sunday, May 20, 2012

Day 06 → Whatever tickles your fancy

Today was very laid back and nice ^^;; I got out of bed briefly to get my laptop and some mandarins, then got out of bed the second time around ^^;;

I curled my hair, something I don't do very often, but I do like curls. They are very whimsical and girly. I think it would be awesome if I had naturally curly hair, but curls do make my hair look short. u-u

I spent a couple of hours at my parents' place. Learned about the type of memory that Macs use and why the "Russian" word for inch is "duim" (it came from Dutch) and looked at lots of photos of kites.

Finally sent off my passport application. (At last I can afford it). But I don't think I'll be able to go to Japan this year. I don't want to go in winter and August/September is probably too soon for M. to take time off from his new (not yet found) job...  Lah, I want to go NOW. (maybe I should just go by myself?)

Dropped by a friend's house and admired his tinsel covered exercycle ^^;;

Bought 4 kilograms of mandarins (that should last me a couple of days :D)

Went to TimeZone to play some Technika 3 (and got disappointed by the game being offline again). I love Japanese and Korean music/rhythm games. I really need to set the drums up at home. Listening to happy music and "playing along" to it is a great mood booster for me.

Had a visit from M's younger brother, that was really nice to hang out without other relatives and parents. Despite having been with M. for 8 years I don't feel like I know his brothers very well u-u;;;

Right now I'm listening to some albums that M got off a friend and thinking that I really need to get to sleep. (But it is less than 12 hours since I got up u-u).

Saturday, May 19, 2012

Day 05 → A quote

"The secret of being boring is to say everything."

I really ought to keep this in mind. ^-~

Friday, May 18, 2012

Day 04 → A book

Terry Pratchett - Unseen Academicals

I think this is the first paper book I've read this year (except for textbooks). A friend ended up with two copies and gave the extra one to me ^^;; It is really nice to read from paper as opposed to the screen and the "new book smell" is absolutely intoxicating. To be honest, I thing I'm enjoying the process of reading more than what I'm reading.

As with most Terry Pratchett books, it is suitably amusing, and I had a few giggles out of the 50 odd pages I've read tonight. I got a bit lost and confused when I realised the book was not broken into parts or chapters. How are you supposed to stop reading for the night if you can't just read to the end of the chapter? Obviously I need to finish the whole book tonight.
M. bought me some cute pink shoes with tentacles and eyes on them^^

Oh no!

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Day 03 → Your favourite television programme

I don't watch TV an awful lot, the only TV series I watch on a regular basis is House and that is coming to an end. Can't say I've been enjoying the last few seasons all that much, but it is comforting to have something to watch every week.

I've also been watching The Game of Thrones starting from the second season, but mostly just to perv at the pretty long hair. What does one have to do to get flawless super long hair like that? (Be an actor and wear a wig is not the answer I'm looking for ;)

Oh and I watch some Korean drama when I get really bored, but instead of watching an episode or two a week, I tend to watch 4 or more back to back every couple of months. Somehow working full-time made me cut down on Kdrama. (The drama I watch at the moment is Rooftop Prince, it is quite silly but it is not as amusing now as the first couple of episodes had lead me to expect.)

*shfty eyes* want

Day 9

Getting snail-mail is awesome :D

Catching up online with a cousin I have not spoken to for 10 years. He's a bit older than me and I never got to know him that well but he always seemed like a nice guy ^^;; He's acting at the city theatre now and I think he was just starting to get professional roles when I left Russia.  Maybe I'll finally get to know him now that we are 13801.1 Kilometres away from each other.

Day 8

This (minus the child please, follow the link to go to its source)
 I love the idea of a nest to sleep in, and being surrounded by cushions on all sides. I often pull the two couches together to create this kind of enclosed space, but that is not exactly classy ^^;;

2 - I stumbled upon a new blog to read - The Dainty Squid, and look at this adorable gif she made. Kaylah posts lots of pictures - thrift treasures, bright hair, cats, no wonder I like it ;)

3 - I want to wear this o-o

Day 7

A yummy dessert.

(It is actually a bath bomb ^^;;)

Apparently smells have very strong connections to memories, and this is one of those smells that is very familiar but you can't quite pick what it is. Like having a word just on the tip of your tongue. After a some thinking I decided that it smells like "Zvezdochka" a balm (quite similar to "Tiger balm") that we used a lot during flu season when I was little, but with more cinnamon. A bit of an unusual smell, especially for a bath but there is something about submerging in old memories.
